A visit to Elafonissi will compensate you for the uniqueness of the place.
Elafonissi (Elafonisos for many) is located in the southwest corner of the prefecture of Chania, Crete, and is something between an island and a peninsula.
Elafonissi means an island of deer, but you will not see any deer walking on the island or in the surrounding area. It is 75 km from Chania and you will need about 2 hours to get here. Organized or upon request day trips are organized by our travel agency CRETE Bus Travel with minibus or coach bus.
The sand in Elafonissi is white, but in many places it has a pink hue. The waters are transparent and with their blue-green color will remind you of exotic paradise.
Why the sand is pink ….?
Responsible for the pink sand are the broken shells, namely the tiny crustaceans called Foraminifera, which when they complete their life cycle and die, leave behind their reddish shells that remain in the water and are crushed in the sand, which her turn gets this stunning shade.
